Can I grow flowers in the EarthBox?Updated a year ago
Yes! You can grow annual flowers (impatiens, petunias, zinnias, sunflowers, marigolds, etc.) in the EarthBox from seeds or seedlings. We recommend that you use our Natural 8-3-5 fertilizer (or similar) for best results.
When you plant bulbs in an EarthBox, you should follow the same setup instructions as with sprouted plants. In the EarthBox Original system, we recommend you plant up to 8. Place the fertilizer strip going down the middle with 4 seed/seedling areas on each side.
After everything is put together, cut your holes in the mulch cover, and add 2-3 seeds or your seedlings in each hole. Winnow out the weaker plants over time, leaving the strongest seedlings to grow to maturity. Pin back the mulch cover flaps so the seeds/seedlings can get access to the sun. Once the seedlings are 2-3 inches tall, you can unpin the covers again.
If you're growing Mammoth sunflowers, please note that only 2 will fit in the EarthBox.
Note: We do not recommend growing perennial flowers.
