How do I replant and start a new season? Should anything be added or reused?Updated a year ago
One of the great things about the EarthBox is that you can reuse it again and again. To get the box ready for your next growing season, you'll want to follow these instructions. You can also watch the process on our Videos page or get a PDF copy with visuals on our Instruction Manuals page.
1. Simply remove your old plants, the old mulch cover, the old fertilizer strip, and some of the surrounding growing media.
2. Mix in 1 pound (roughly 2 cups) of Dolomite to the existing growing media if you're replanting in the EarthBox Original or EarthBox Root & Veg. If you're replanting in the EarthBox Junior, halve the amount.
3. Add 1 pound (about 2 cups) of dry, granular fertilizer (1.5 lbs. / 3 cups if using an organic fertilizer) in the form of a 2-inch-wide strip, burying it 2"-4". Refer to the Planting Guide to know where the fertilizer strip should be placed. Again, if you're replanting in the EarthBox Junior, halve the fertilizer amount.
4. Top the EarthBox off with some fresh growing media, creating a 4"-6" mound (so water doesn't pool on the mulch cover).
5. Put a new mulch cover on your EarthBox.
6. Plant your seeds or seedlings according to the Plant Placement Chart. Now is also the only time we recommend watering around the base of each seedling to help prevent transplant shock.
You can use the same growing media up to 8-10 growing seasons, and the EarthBox for decades if taken care of properly! If you need more fertilizer and dolomite, check out our pre-measured replant kit.
